Cakebowl 4

Photos and results from a fantastic weekend of Blood Bowl and cake at a new venue in Swindon! Scoring was 10/5/0 with 1 point per TD and Cas, to a maximum of 3 each.

Now my tournament report:
As I arrived at the virtually empty free car park, having advised a couple of people to park 10 mins walk away (oops), and eventually made it into the pub via the back door, I found people already tucking into some awesome looking fryups. Personally, I was saving myself for the cake. Gary was in action inputting teams into Score, though not thoroughly checking score sheets as Hangus discovered in Game 4 that the tournament was 115 TV instead of 110 TV. Lol.
Living up to its billing as the most skill-tastic tournament on the circuit, you were allowed up to 12 normal skills on the two days, or could swap 2 normals for a double as much as you wanted (so up to 6 doubles). Half the skills were given on the first day, half on the second. There were a few notable teams – dwarves with 10 guard and a wizard, dwarves with two DP trollslayers (he didn’t know the rules very well), only one stunty team (ogres), 4 identical lizardman builds (though with different skills), 2 appearances by Glart and last but not least Strictly Come Wardancing with 2 wardancers, Jordell and no rostered rerolls (thank goodness for Leader). Number of playes meant that Hudson was playing as well as TOing, luckily he’s multi-talented!
Shortarse’s skaven were first out of the blocks, winning 7-1, which with a 5-3 in game 6 was enough to win him the most TDs award with 18 for the tournament. Ploughman’s for lunch, included in the bargainous £20 entry fee, along with as much cake as you can eat (and Hawk was there!). Two brothers were playing each other in their first BB tournament, which was lucky as their 25 minute walk to check in turned into a 1.5 hour trek around the delights of Swindon!
Game 2 saw me sneak a win after a turn of shocking defending against elves, which is never a good idea, and the Jordell machine keep on rolling. On to Game 3, and it was lizards v elves on table 1. Jordell scored quickly, after a forgettable moment where I didn’t check his skills and underestimated Tempest, thinking she’d made a mistake (apologies!) only for him to sidestep away. Lots of shenanigans followed, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw, with 3 elves left on the pitch.
As some headed off home (Swindon is excellent for travelling purposes, and the venue was 30 secs from the station!) others stayed for quality evening food and the long wait for the 11pm kick off for the England game. Not worth the wait, as it turned out…
Sunday was planned to be a late start (Hudson likes a snooze), but vmcat still managed to oversleep, turning up in time for his dark elves to turn over the (by now, fully tooled up) dwarves. Jordell killed himself in a blizzard gfi, leading to a table 1 2-2, and the lizard mirror match on table 2 (with a few skill differences) was a bit of a massacre after an early failed hand off. Hawk started his plummet, earning him the worst Sunday award, and Besters started amassing the points that would take him to table 1 in game 6.
A roast for Sunday lunch (also included!) turned up a bit late, but Wightlord could have stayed and eaten his at leisure rather than have to suffer through his game 5 against me. Not pretty, and not able to take down a woefully underprotected ball carrier. By this stage I only needed a draw in Round 6 to take the tournament, but hadn’t done the sums enough to know this for sure.
I was pleased to shut out Besters’ skaven in the first half, only to concede a half-dice, scatter, 4+ pick up skaven shenanigans TD, then a 6 turn trundle to make it 1-1, and take the tournament, along with enough dead rats to also pick up most touchdowns.
TP took the spoon, edging out his brother for it, but both seemed to have a nice time, and Canteloup had a great Sunday to get best comeback with his skaven. I won a lemon drizzle cake, tempest came 2nd and got ginger, and besters took 3rd and a victoria sponge, all courtesy of Jo (Mrs Hudson). Lots of fun all weekend, likley to be back there next year if they will have it, probably staying at the venue to drink copiously and play X-wing!
